Supervisor’s Guideline for the Marine Industries

Overview
Curriculum

Falls from height continue to be a significant cause of workplace fatalities in the marine industry, with over 30% of workplace deaths in recent years attributed to such incidents. In addition to these tragic fatalities, many workers also sustain serious injuries each year due to falls from elevated areas. With the growing need for tasks to be performed at height in the marine sector, the risk of falling hazards is increasing, underscoring the critical importance of proper safety training.

This course aims to equip workers and supervisors in the marine industry with the essential knowledge and skills to prevent falls from height. By examining past incidents, the course identifies key contributing factors that lead to these accidents, such as unsafe work environments, the absence of comprehensive risk assessments before starting work, the lack of established Safe Work Procedures (SWPs), poor supervision, insufficient training, and the failure to follow safety rules and practices. Understanding these factors is crucial in reducing the risks associated with working at height.

The course focuses on the implementation of Safe Work Procedures (SWPs) to control hazards and prevent accidents. These procedures are especially important for inexperienced workers, who may not be able to effectively identify or avoid the dangers of an unsafe work environment. By learning how to perform thorough risk assessments, participants will be better equipped to recognize potential hazards and apply preventive measures before starting any task.

Proper supervision and adherence to safety guidelines are also emphasized throughout the training. The course highlights the importance of ensuring that workers follow established safety practices, while supervisors are responsible for overseeing and maintaining compliance with safety protocols.

By the end of the course, participants will have a solid understanding of how to create a safer working environment at heights, reducing the occurrence of falls, injuries, and fatalities in the marine industry. This training is vital for both workers and supervisors committed to workplace safety.
