WSH Guidelines for Delivery Services Industry

Overview
Curriculum

Delivery companies and intermediaries can enhance rider and driver safety by implementing practical measures to foster safer behaviors and reduce risks. This training course focuses on improving safety for delivery personnel through a set of actionable steps.

First, companies should utilize telematics devices or app-based platforms to monitor vehicle speed and provide personalized feedback on driving or riding behavior. By gathering data, companies can engage directly with riders or drivers who demonstrate risky habits and offer guidance on how to improve.

Next, companies can incentivize safe behavior by introducing safety benefits or recognition programs. Offering rewards for consistent, cautious driving helps curb the temptation to rush, promoting a safer, more measured approach to deliveries.

Equipping riders and drivers with knowledge is equally important. Defensive driving or riding training, offered for free, should cover essential topics such as road traffic rules, blind spot awareness, braking techniques, and maintaining balance. These skills help prevent accidents and improve overall safety on the road.

In addition, for those operating two-wheeled vehicles, there should be no penalties for declining heavy loads. If a load is too large and cannot be divided, the rider should be compensated for their travel time to the pickup location, even if they ultimately reject the load. This prevents riders from feeling pressured to accept dangerous or difficult deliveries.

Finally, companies should steer clear of offering bonuses or imposing penalties based on delivery times for individual trips. To further support riders, customers should be informed of potential delays during bad weather conditions, ensuring that riders aren’t rushed or forced to take unsafe risks.

This course aims to create a safer working environment for delivery riders and drivers by promoting smart safety measures, empowering them through training, and mitigating exposure to hazardous situations.
