WSH Guidelines Management of Indoor Air Quality in Air-Conditioned Workplaces

Overview
Curriculum

Indoor air quality (IAQ) is a critical factor in maintaining health and comfort, especially since we spend the majority of our time indoors in workplaces such as offices and factories. In Singapore’s hot and humid climate, where air conditioning and mechanical ventilation (ACMV) systems are heavily relied upon, IAQ becomes even more significant due to the increased risk of indoor air contamination.

This course is designed to help participants understand the importance of managing IAQ in air-conditioned workplaces. Poor IAQ can arise from various sources, including carpets, rugs, printers, photocopiers, and other equipment that release gases, particulates, and microbial contaminants like mould and bacteria. The consequences of poor IAQ include health issues such as coughing, headaches, and eye irritation—symptoms commonly associated with sick building syndrome. These health problems can also lead to reduced productivity, as sickness and absenteeism become more prevalent in environments with poor air quality.

The course provides practical guidance for managing IAQ effectively. Participants will learn how to assess potential contaminants and implement strategies to maintain a healthy indoor environment. The training also highlights the role of the IAQ Manager, who is responsible for ensuring that air quality risks are managed and that the indoor environment meets the standards set by the Singapore Standard SS 554: 2009, Code of Practice for Indoor Air Quality for air-conditioned buildings.

Aimed at building owners, workplace occupiers, and facility managers, this course equips participants with the tools and knowledge to establish an effective IAQ Management Programme. By prioritizing good indoor air quality, companies can safeguard the health and wellbeing of their employees, reduce absenteeism, and enhance overall productivity.
