WSH Guidelines on Diagnosis and Management of Occupational Diseases

Overview
Curriculum

This comprehensive training course on Occupational Diseases (ODs) is designed to equip doctors and healthcare professionals with the knowledge and tools needed to recognize, diagnose, and manage work-related illnesses. Occupational diseases arise from exposure to workplace hazards, and early detection is essential to prevent long-term health effects. However, these diseases are often underreported and overlooked due to long latency periods and the evolving nature of industries, including the use of new technologies and materials.

Under the Workplace Safety and Health Act, doctors are legally required to report ODs. Despite this, many cases go unrecognized, which delays treatment and allows risks to persist. This course emphasizes the importance of identifying ODs early, as timely intervention can minimize disability, prevent further deterioration, and protect other workers from similar risks. Furthermore, ODs are covered under the Work Injury Compensation Act, making it essential for healthcare providers to understand both diagnosis and reporting processes.

The course includes a variety of resources to aid in the diagnosis and management of ODs. Participants will have access to photographs of common work processes, which are useful when taking occupational histories to identify potential exposures. There are also illustrations of personal protective equipment to support patient education. Additionally, a detailed step-by-step guide on how to report ODs to the Ministry of Manpower is included, along with a list of clinics where healthcare professionals can refer patients for further investigation.

By the end of this course, doctors and healthcare professionals will be better equipped to identify, report, and manage occupational diseases, ensuring that their patients receive appropriate care and that legal obligations are met. This training is supported by the Ministry of Manpower and Workplace Safety and Health Council, with input from experts in the field.
