WSH Guidelines on Investigating Workplace Incidents for SMEs

Overview
Curriculum
This training course on incident investigation and risk assessment focuses on the vital role these processes play in preventing workplace accidents and minimizing risks. Incidents, which include injuries, damages to equipment, or disruptions to operations, can be costly and often preventable. Understanding the root causes of incidents is key to avoiding their recurrence, and this course aims to equip participants with the skills and knowledge necessary to effectively conduct risk assessments and incident investigations.

The training begins by emphasizing the importance of risk assessment as a proactive tool for identifying potential hazards in the workplace. By recognizing these risks early, workers and management can implement preventive measures to reduce the likelihood of incidents. Risk assessment is an essential component of any safety management system and helps to ensure a safer working environment for all.

In addition to risk assessment, participants will be trained in systematic incident investigation techniques. The course covers the importance of investigating not only incidents that cause harm but also near-misses—those that could have resulted in injuries or damages but didn’t. By analyzing these situations, organizations can build confidence among their workers, address any underlying concerns, and prevent future accidents. The course offers a step-by-step guide for conducting investigations, including gathering relevant information, analyzing the causes, implementing corrective actions, and reviewing the effectiveness of these actions.

The training also touches on cooperation with local authorities, such as the Ministry of Manpower, the Singapore Civil Defence Force, or the Singapore Police Force, in cases of major incidents. Participants will learn how to handle such situations calmly, ensuring safety procedures are followed while collaborating with investigators.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to carry out thorough risk assessments and incident investigations, contributing to a safer workplace and reducing the operational and financial impacts of workplace accidents.
