WSH Guidelines on Personal Protective Equipment for Work at Height

Overview
Curriculum

The training course on Fall from Heights (FFH) prevention is designed to address one of the most significant causes of workplace injuries and fatalities: falls from heights. This course is particularly aimed at contractors, supervisors, and workers who are regularly involved in Working at Heights (WAH) activities, equipping them with essential knowledge on using personal protective equipment (PPE) and other safety measures.

Falls from heights pose serious risks to workers, making it essential to implement effective safety practices. The course focuses on the proper application of PPE, such as full-body harnesses, energy absorbers, connectors, and lanyards, which serve as key components of a Personal Fall Arrest System (PFAS). These tools, when used correctly, can significantly reduce the risk of severe injuries or fatalities in the event of a fall.

Risk assessment is a critical element of the training, as participants will learn how to evaluate hazards before beginning any WAH activity. Whenever possible, the course emphasizes eliminating or substituting these high-risk activities. When such alternatives are not feasible, the next line of defense is using temporary edge protection systems, such as guardrails. If edge protection is not an option, the training explains how anchorages and lifelines, in combination with PPE, can provide a second layer of protection.

Through the course, participants will gain a thorough understanding of the Personal Fall Arrest System (PFAS), how to select appropriate PPE that meets international safety standards, and the limitations of PPE in certain scenarios. The course also addresses suspension trauma, a potentially dangerous condition that can occur after a fall, and covers the correct methods for inspecting and maintaining PPE to ensure it functions properly when needed.

By the end of the course, participants will be well-equipped to recognize fall hazards, select and use the correct PPE, and implement best practices in fall prevention. This training is essential for anyone working in environments where falling from heights is a risk, ensuring the safety and well-being of workers while minimizing accidents in the workplace.
