WSH Guidelines on Safeguarding Against Falling Objects

Overview
Curriculum

"Struck by Falling Objects" (SBFO) is the second leading cause of workplace fatalities in Singapore and poses a significant risk across all industry sectors. SBFO incidents not only threaten workers but also members of the public if safety measures are inadequate. Workplace injuries and fatalities from falling objects highlight the need for stringent safety practices, particularly in environments where objects may fall from height.

Management plays a critical role in preventing SBFO incidents by leading Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) initiatives. Establishing a strong safety culture where every individual takes responsibility for safety is key to reducing these incidents. When management actively champions WSH efforts, it fosters a proactive approach to workplace safety.

These guidelines focus specifically on the dangers of objects falling from height, which can cause fatal injuries when they strike workers or the public. Even when personal protective equipment (PPE) like helmets is used, it may not be sufficient to protect individuals from the severe impact of falling objects. Therefore, it is crucial to implement reasonable and practical measures to prevent objects from falling in the first place.

The course is designed to equip participants with the knowledge needed to identify SBFO hazards and take preventive actions to minimize risks. It provides guidance on recognizing potential risks, implementing controls to prevent falling objects, and ensuring the safety of workers, visitors, and the public. The training also emphasizes the importance of proactive site management and continuous monitoring to ensure safety practices are upheld.

This course is essential for anyone involved in high-risk work environments, offering practical strategies for improving site safety and reducing the risk of SBFO incidents. Participants will leave with a clear understanding of how to safeguard against these preventable accidents.
